Two persons were Tuesday night killed, while 16 others were severely injured when gunmen, suspected to be Fulani herdsmen, attacked a church at Maikatako village in Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State.
One other person was also killed in Manguna area of the local government.
It was gathered that during the crossover night service at the Church of Christ in Nations (COCIN), Maiakworigold, some gunmen stormed the church and started shooting sporadically, killing two people on the spot and injuring 16 others.
An eyewitness, Augustine Bim, told THISDAY in Jos, that the night service to usher in the New Year was going on when the gunmen stormed the church and began to shoot at worshippers.
He added that the 16 people injured in the attack were being treated at hospitals in Jos and Barkin Ladi.
The Speaker of the state House of Assembly and member representing Bokkos constituency, Hon. Titus Alams, confirmed that two people were killed and 16 others injured in the church attack.
He explained that five of the injured persons, who were receiving treatment at the state Specialist Hospital in Jos, were in stable conditions, while the 11 others were receiving treatment at Barkin Ladi General Hospital.
Alams commended security operatives for their prompt response, urging them to do everything possible to fish out the perpetrators.
The speaker also appealed to the youths in the area to remain calm and report any suspicious movement to law enforcement agents.
